Keeping it in the Family

Keeping it in the Family.

Cultural Transmission is the passing on of culture and traditions from one generation to another. Each family has its own distinct culture, where traditions are kept alive, passed on within each family’s home life.

Radha moved to London from New Delhi in March 1976. She has lived on the same street ever since. Bringing her three children up, there was never any conscious discussion around cultural identity and what it meant. Hindi was spoken in the home, Indian food eaten frequently, her children played with their cousins who lived on the same street and they would celebrate Diwali and Raksha Bandhan together each year.

Now with a third generation growing up in North Yorkshire, further away from extended family members, without the same traditions in the home, there is a much greater awareness of how to instil an understanding of their heritage and culture.

This story looks at the role the family play in passing on of cultural understanding and identity.

I am grateful to all my family and extended family in allowing me to tell this story

“It makes me feel proud.”

“It makes me unique.”
